WhatsNot
Privacy Policy

Summary
WhatsNot is a parental-control tool designed to be installed by a parent on a child's Android device. It blocks algorithmic distraction surfaces inside WhatsApp — the Updates tab, the Communities tab, and the channel directory. WhatsNot collects no personal data, transmits nothing off the device, and contains no advertising or analytics. This page explains exactly what the app does and what it does not do.
Data we collect
None.
WhatsNot does not collect, store, or transmit any personal information. There are no accounts. There is no analytics SDK. There are no advertising identifiers. No crash reports are sent to third parties. Nothing about you, your device, or your usage of WhatsApp ever leaves your phone.
How the Accessibility Service is used
WhatsNot uses Android's Accessibility Service for one purpose only: to detect when you open distraction-heavy areas of WhatsApp — the Updates tab, the Communities tab, or the "Find Channels" button — and to automatically navigate you back to your conversations.
Specifically, the service:
- Inspects accessibility events only while WhatsApp is in the foreground. No other apps are observed.
- Reads only the visible text labels of UI elements you tap — for example "Updates" or "עדכונים" — to determine whether the area you are about to open is blocked.
- Never reads message content, contacts, photos, calls, status updates, group names, or any other personal information inside or outside WhatsApp.
- Stores nothing. There is no log of what you tapped, when you opened WhatsApp, or any other activity. Nothing persists locally beyond a single boolean preference (see below) and nothing is sent to a server.
Settings stored on the device
WhatsNot stores three small values locally in Android's standard
SharedPreferences on the device. None of these values
are ever transmitted anywhere:
- A blocking on/off flag — the state of the toggle on the home screen.
- A disclosure-shown flag — a boolean recording that the user has seen the in-app accessibility disclosure, so it is not shown again on every launch.
- A SHA-256 hash of the parent PIN — used to verify the PIN when the parent disables blocking. The PIN itself is never stored; only its one-way hash is. We have no way to recover or read the PIN, even from the device. If the parent forgets the PIN, the only way to reset it is to uninstall and reinstall the app.
Permissions
WhatsNot requests one permission:

BIND_ACCESSIBILITY_SERVICE— required to operate the Accessibility Service described above. You explicitly grant this in Android Settings → Accessibility → WhatsNot, and you can revoke it at any time from the same screen.
Third parties
WhatsNot integrates with no third-party services. There are no advertising networks, no analytics providers, no crash-reporting SDKs, and no remote configuration. WhatsApp is not a partner of, or affiliated with, this app — WhatsNot observes WhatsApp's interface from the outside in the same way a sighted user would, and is not endorsed by or connected to Meta Platforms, Inc.
Children's privacy
WhatsNot is designed to be installed and configured by a parent on a child's device. The child is the device user; the parent is the decision-maker. The app collects no data from any user — child or adult. There are no accounts, no usage tracking, no behavioral analytics, and no logs of which areas of WhatsApp the child opened or attempted to open. We comply with COPPA and similar regulations by collecting no personal information from anyone.
For the strongest protection of the child user, we recommend pairing WhatsNot with Google Family Link. Family Link is a separate Google product that operates outside WhatsNot; it can prevent the child from uninstalling WhatsNot or disabling the Accessibility Service in system settings. WhatsNot does not communicate with, or share any data with, Family Link or any other Google service.
Your rights
Since no data leaves the device, there is nothing for us to delete, export, or correct on your behalf. You can uninstall the app at any time, and revoke the Accessibility permission from Android Settings independently of installing or removing WhatsNot. Uninstalling the app also clears the locally stored PIN hash and all other local preferences.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes in any material way, the new version will be posted at this URL with an updated effective date. Material changes will also be surfaced in the app on next launch.
